Betting Stats After Group Stage
Hello, Participants!
It's Tetley, your numerically challenged statistician, with another attempt at a weekly update. Nothing has changed in the leadership, but there has been a little bit of shuffling among the followers.
As it is,
vane_nt is still the uncontested Master Guesser with 26 correct predictions, followed by
bendleshnitz1 and
tetleythesecond with 23 and
tjs_whatnot and
shocolate with 20.
pale_moonlite and
ysilme follow with 18 correct guesses each, and
kelly_chambliss is steadily catching up with 14.
In terms of correct guesses this week, the crown goes to
tjs_whatnot, who totally deserves this honorary mention, what with being the first participant who will definitely have to drabble. (But fear not, many of us will be joining you shortly.)
Right. I'll now close my eyes and hit "post" -- and hope I didn't cheat dear
bendleshnitz1 YET another time.

But srsly, what was I thinking?? ITALY?!?!?!?!
Who wants what, drabble wise? Might as well start sharpening my pencils!
no subject
Sorry for Italy (okay, not really, but for you *g*). I'll cheer for the US tonight. :)
no subject
Exactly what I was thinking. I do love Italy, but their football could take a page out of an Italian cook book.
(Unrelated: HOW cool is the Uruguayan anthem? *off to find out composer*)

And I really don't know what I was basing this bet on. I really should do SOME research before making this sorts of bets! Oh well.
lkfja;sfj;k YES! Root for the US and I'll root for Germany tomorrow morning!!
no subject
We have a deal! :)))

And I think I'm okay with having fallen back as long as Germany makes it to the final. (Together with the Netherlands or the US. Well, one can hope, right? *g*)

(Yes, I realise that my bet is on Ghana, but I had to say something -- and they're the last remaining African team, they played very well against us, and my partner roots for them. Still. If one can bet on Spain for the finals but root for Oranje when it comes to that...)
On that note, I just read an article on www.spiegel.de that there's a small right-wing fringe group in the US that condemns soccer for being Un-American (read: Marxist, communist, socialist) and says it can't hold a candle to baseball. Which is true. I don't sleep half so soundly in a soccer stadium as in a baseball one.

Aren't those guys amazing who made it all the way down to the cape in their vans? When did they start? Sometime in April, as far as I remember.
I was so angry when Netzer said something along the lines that the US team was simply bad, as everyone knew. It wasn't even true for the match he was referring to. The US are a fun team, they look like they enjoy playing and they did really well so far.
Ghana are very fast and very motivated. I hope for an exciting game.

Hehe. I've never been to a baseball game, and I'm glad to hear that I haven't missed anything. I've seen a lot of baseball movies on TV, but I never really got it.
Those fascists are simply stupid. Their arguments would be funny if they weren't so cringe-worthy. I especially liked the "ethnic antagonism" of England : Germany. But it's good to hear that soccer gets more and more popular in the US.

HA! Exactly! When everyone who has ever seen Wayne Rooney and Lukas Podolski (bless both their hearts) can no longer doubt for a minute that there *must* be some common ancestry there, however far back /g/.
Jokes aside, my partner went to the last friendly match between England and Germany over here, I think about 18 months ago, and whilst being absolute footballer-y rock bottom, it was exactly that: a friendly. Of course it's a classic, and of course the press give their all (and no, there is NO way that that ball back in '66 was behind the line), but I didn't feel for a minute that anyone in that stadium felt actual hostility.

And question, why does tjs_whatnot have to write a drabble?

Mexico-Uruguay
Greece-Argentina
Slovenia-England
USA-Algeria
Ghana-Germany
Cameroon-Netherlands
Portugal-Brazil
North Korea-Côte d'Ivoire
Chile-Spain
... so 23.
Did you maybe count yesterday's Korea-Uruguay from the knockout phase already? Because I have that in the next list (for the round of 16)
no subject
Okay, *facepalm*
I wrote it down wrong in my fixture. So so sorry!
I swear I didn't do it on purpose.
I won't bother anymore. Primose. :)

After all, I have a history -- and I'd rather be double-checked than risk cheating a fellow better out of a perfectly valid point (sez she who'd rather have done without referee help for her team today.)
no subject
Oh, where are you from? England?
no subject
I didn't think you were doing this on purpose. And I swear that even though we're neck-to-neck, I didn't mis-count on purpose, either!
no subject
Yep, I know what you mean. When the referee makes such mistakes it's pretty shameful. For example, yesterday, Argentina's first goal was offside but the referee didn't see it and count it as a goal. The Mexicans were on fire and I totally understand why. Good thing we did two more goals, cause if we had won 1-0 I would have felt guilty.
No, I trust you. :) I just know my score because I have three bets going on at once and I'm keeping score of all (my brother is the cheater, you see? lol). If this would ahve been my only bet I would never know.
